Ethical issues are everywhere in the business world. Tom was an employee or a local privately owned manufacturing company for twelve years concert tickets. He was considered to be a good worker, and highly respected by his peers, but Tom had an unethical secret that was beginning to come to light. Tom had been steeling scrap metal from the company for years and selling it for additional income. His plan had been going great and no one was wise about his activities until the company did inventory, and notice the company had several inconsistencies in the parts replaced and the profits from scrap metal. The company conducted a meeting with all the employees urging them if they knew who was stealing the scrap metal to inform the supervisor. Tom began to get worried, and decided to blame a fellow employee. The company installed several hidden cameras but refused to inform the employees to catch the individual in the act. It did not take long for time to be caught in the act.
Is this really unethical or is just a man looking for additional income. Ethical behavior is being in accordance with the rules or standards for right conduct or practice. Stealing will always be considered unethical. It is an issue that is not appropriate for anyone or any organization, but this is not the only unethical issue that Tom was guilty of committing in this situation. These can have dire affect for the company and the individual. Guilty often plays a role for the individual. The fact that Tom knows what he is doing is wrong, and blaming it on another person could cause his conscious to make him feel like n awful man. This would be a horrible feeling for an individual, but the impacts that it has on the company, the remaining employees, and his job would be far worse. The company would first off losing money from the scrap profits. With Tom stealing the scrap metal the company would have less to sell. Additional expense and time would also be a factor. The company had to install security camera to catch Tom and stop this behavior, and also the organization loss time by conducting an investigation, having company meetings on the issue, monitoring the cameras, and dealing with Tom. For Tom the impacts of his decision have cost him his job and his freedom. Tom was terminated from the company for his unethical act, and also had criminal charges filed against him for theft.
